Local Band Wooster Heads to LA Thursday

In June of 2010 local Santa Cruz band Wooster entered the Ford Gimme the Gig contest along with 2,500 other bands from around the country. Ford has been looking for the best independent musicians and bands out there to compete for the grand prize of having their music produced by Grammy Award winning producer Don Was.

After making it through several rounds of competition, including playing live at a Ford Fiesta event this past October at the Escondido Fair and most recently garnering over 6,000 votes on the Gimme the Gig website, Wooster has made it to the final 7 bands.

This Thursday, February 17, Wooster and seven other bands will compete for the grand prize Battle-of-the-Bands Style at the world famous Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in LA.

The party bus from SC to LA leaves Thurday morning at 10 am. Check Wooster's Facebook page for details on how to get on board. If you can't make it to LA the action will be streaming live on Gimmethegig.com starting at 8 pm PST.

Holiday Hangover - We're closed 12/24 - 12/28

We will be closed this Friday, Dec. 24 through Thursday, Dec. 28 but back in action on Friday, Dec. 29 and probably not closed again until next Thanksgiving.

Santa Cruz Kickstarter Campaigns

Fan funding is all the rage these days and we've noticed a few Santa Cruz bands getting in on the action. Check out these local Kickstarter pages if you'd like to see how a few of our local acts are taking their projects straight to the fans.

audiafauna - campaign audiafauna's first full length album

audiafauna's goal is to raise $8000 by February 1 in order to begin their recording early next year. As of this blog post, they already had 58 backers and at $4863 raised, they are well on their way to reaching their goal. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYF1nN47SuU]

Shane Klein - campaign Co-create an album with me

In early 2011 Shane hopes to record his debut album.  His goal is to raise $17,000 to sustain himself and his family while also funding his actual recording expenses. As of this blog post, with only 5 backers and $745 raised, he has a ways to go to meet his goal in the next 21 days.

What is Fan Funding? [excerpted from The Musicians Guide to Fan Funding]

Fan-funding (or crowdfunding) is the simple concept of empowering the fans to raise money for you- to FUND your project. Typically this is done through an incentive system, in which the artist will set a monetary goal, and has a set amount of time to reach said goal. There are then different levels of rewards that vary based on the amount a fan contributes towards the project.

Happy Thanksgiving (SCRS Closed 11/23-11/26)

Here at Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios we are really thankful for you. Thankful that you are coming in and playing good music. We are also thankful for our family which is why we are closing for the first time since we opened this January.

We will be back in action this Saturday, ready for your post-Thanksgiving session.

In the meantime, check out our favorite holiday recipe:

WANTED - Your Band T-Shirt

SCRS has been participating in the First Friday art tour for the past few months. Next month our show will feature the "Band T-Shirt As Art" and we are busy collecting local band T-Shirts to feature.

I have been trying to email bands directly, but there is a lot of ground to cover in just a few short weeks so if you are a band reading this and have a T-Shirt we could borrow for the month of August - please email me at jenn@santacruzrehearsalstudios.com so we can set up a time for me to pick it up or have you drop it by the studio.

All T-Shirts included in the show can be sold at the opening night reception and throughout the month of August.

Pass the Open Mic

I was thinking about all the Open Mic nights around the Bay Area and the fact that technically a band could do an "Open Mic Tour"  - granted there would be no pay involved, but the booking would be easy (just show up!) and there might even be some new fans to convert. You could be playing SF tonight!

For those looking to get on stage, any stage, this is a viable option that could open some cool new doors. Here is my totally un-comprehensive, non-scientifically proven list of Bay Area Open Mics. Things change, so please confirm with venues before you drive all the way out for an open mic event.

Oops - just did some Google searching and what do you know - there is already a totally awesome, comprehensive Bay Area Open Mic Calendar... so check out my baby list, then go to the REAL site.

New Korg Keyboard in the House

A number of bands have asked us about a keyboard option so we are excited to welcome this new Korg to the family. She is available to rent for $10 per session (on top of regular room rates). Here is some PR from the Korg website.

Introducing the Korg SP-250

Korg brings a heightened level of realism and feel to its line of portable digital stage pianos with the new SP-250. The Korg SP-250 provides an expanded range of expression and performance with an outstanding new stereo piano sound, which is matched to a third-generation RH3 graded action keyboard. The SP-250 Digital Piano is the perfect answer for any pianist looking for rich piano sounds and the convenience of a lightweight, portable instrument.

You can read tons more about the keyboad on the Korg website.

Band Booklist

If you are a musician, are in a band, or play an instrument Santa Cruz Public Libraries wants to know what book(s) influenced you in your craft. They are compiling a booklist for the young musicians in the Santa Cruz area for our 2nd Annual Teen Battle of the Bands on July 24 (deadline to enter is June 17).

We have a sign up sheet at the studio or please leave a comment with your suggestion and your band name (not required but nice to have).

On the list so far:

Archer Auditioning Drummers

Santa Cruz based hard rock/metal trio Archer is auditioning drummers. As seen on Craig's List.

Archer will be holding auditions in the coming weeks for a new drummer. Archer has already  taken part in several notable events/appearances including a 2009 U.S. and Canadian tour run with headliner Black Label Society, multiple European/Japan rock festivals, industry events (NAMM shows, label showcases, etc) and more. Primary goals currently include attending U.S. rock festivals that are already booked (Midwest Rockfest, etc.), and the completion of a new record that can be supported with extensive touring and promotion.

The immediate focus becomes filling the role of drums as quickly as possible but the big picture is to capitalize on opportunities already in place including touring (with national acts), record industry showcase options, and gear endorsements in order to reach the ultimate goal of being successful in this industry. Archer is looking for someone with solid musicianship, excellent stage presence, optional potential for backup vocals, a good metal look, and the dedication and desire for a career in music. Check out http://archernation.com/& http://www.myspace.com/archer if interested. Please reply for a more specific response regarding audition details and future plans. Serious inquiries only please!

Good Times - The Best - Critic Pick

We are truly honored to be included with this years Good Times Critics' Picks. We promise to work even harder to be your best friend ever.

Best New Musician’s Friend SANTA CRUZ REHEARSAL STUDIOS When you want to rock out but not get kicked out (of your home, garage, neighborhood), and you actually want to clearly hear every component of your band’s new song (instruments and vocals), it helps to have a sweet practice space with a sweet sound set-up. Enter the spankin’ new Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios. One answer to the city’s sound ordinances (or your mom’s curfew for bombastic steely shreddage), the studio’s four spacious rehearsal rooms opened to the public in January, bringing a professional touch to the Santa Cruz underground. Open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until midnight, SCRS is owned and operated by Paul and Jennifer Gallacher—a powerhouse couple in the music loop. With Paul’s expertise as a former luthier at Santa Cruz Guitar Company (not to mention his days in L.A. playing guitar in a power trio) adding a nice touch to the counter, SCRS makes musicians feel right at home. Bands like Archer, the Luxury Sweets, and Moon Cadillac have already uncovered this gem near Harvey West Park, and it’s helping them stay in top gigging form. Offering high-end gear and fully soundproofed studios at an affordable rate (they even serve up free snacks and drinks for starving musicians!), SCRS brings the panache of the big city music scene without the attitude or price tag. And, yes, even the bathroom is pristine. Ready to kick out the jams? Now you know where to go. (santacruzrehearsalstudios.com) | LK

You're So Vain - How to Create a Vanity Facebook URL

Now that ALL bands are on Facebook I want to share a little tip that some excellent pages have overlooked - the vanity URL. Just like you can have your www.myspace.com slash band name, so too can you have your www.facebook.com / band name.

For example, SCRS has www.facebook.com/santacruzrehearsalstudios - this way it makes it super easy for us to promote our FB page / put it on a flyer/ ad, etc.

To get this nifty vanity URL just visit - www.facebook.com/username/

If you make one, send me a link, comment, email or written letter so I can post it on our site.

First Friday / Form and Flow / May 7 6-9 PM

With so many musician/artists in our midst it was only a matter of time before our once bare walls got a little decorating. Over the past week a few of Santa Cruz's finest have graced our walls/shelves with their work (and more to come before next month).

Friday, May 7 we are participating in the "First Friday" art tour and hosting a reception (aka party) from 6-9 PM. Music will be provided by Moon Cadillac.

FORM AND FLOW WORKS IN METAL, WATERCOLOR AND OIL BY CJ FLORES, PEPE TIGER AND MIKE WELSH.    FLORES For the past thirteen years local artist and performer CJ Flores has been sculpting lights, mirrors and outdoor art out of metal and wood. His signature lights cut out of recycled olive oil tins can be found in sacred spaces throughout the county. Constantly inspired by the female form, many of his pieces depict women’s innate sexuality and power. Also a tattoo artist, his latest series is inspired by flash and the rockabilly subculture.   TIGER Santa Cruz native, Pepe NUnez, aka Pepe Tiger paints your grandmother’s caricature at the Boardwalk by day, and your wildest dreams by night. Taking inspiration from the streets, his paintings depict modern interpretations of everything from the girl next door to the Virgin Mary. www.myspace.com/pepetiger     WELSH Describing his art as “collaborative interactive” Mike Welsh embraces the impermanence of life itself.  His latest collection of skim board art was created with ink/oil on wood and then tested for function in the surf. The waves and sand add a dimension of texture to pieces that are not just decorative.   Please join us for our First Friday debut on Friday, May 7 from 6-9 pm at Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, 118 Coral Street (in Harvey West next to Polar Radiator), as we toast these fine local artists. Music & libations will be provided.
