Chelsea Briggen – a love story

Artist Statement I paint because the color makes me want to crawl out of my mind and join it in its simple vibrancy. I paint to feel the texture of the substance spread. I paint to say something that has no words just a feeling. And sometimes I'm painting to escape or heal or do something external when in fact painting simply brings me to the highest place in myself... consistently. Sitting in front of an empty canvas feels like waking up each morning. I have options. I have a trunk full of colors and my heart pours ideas through me... This is my joy. To paint.

Living in Squalor (its a lot of fun)

" through gritty, expired film, thrift store cameras, light leaks, and the destruction of the natural world, August and Natalie present a joint collection of photos that are both candid and personal, depicting the sometimes temporary, always precarious, world of west coast punks, anarchists, 90s enthusiasts and freaky burnouts.

In this show, Natalie's work portrays an unabashed dedication to analogue, capturing the world through double exposed film and intimate portraits in black and white. August's work focuses on fuzzy portraits of punks and nature, as well as an inside view of life in the turmoil of a nihilistic "post-everything" subculture.  "

First Friday, June 1

First Friday, June 1 Precious on the Edge Artist Reception: 6-9 p.m.

Precious on the Edge is a joint photo exhibit; a collective snapshot into fringe culture from an insider's perspective. The work of Bryan G. May and Jake Ander Simowitz embodies the intimacy of subcultural transience, the comfort of dusty memories, and the luxury of sneaking into art school print studios.

In photographs framed behind glass, as slide film projections, and on the pages of zines, Bryan and Jake include the medium in their work, producing an array of images that urge an audience to both "skate or die" and to "never give up".

In this forthcoming show, Jake's work focuses on nature through a lens of turmoil, seasons in different places, and the exuberance of youth. Bryan's photos capture life at the crosshairs of intoxication and resistance, the ardor of punk house relationships, and crisp portraits of dirty people.

First Friday, May 4 Artist Reception 6-9 p.m.

Artist Statement:

I am Geoff Llewellyn. My tool of choice is a camera; any camera-- in particular, for the majority of photographs on display here, a medium format camera was the tool of choice. Mostly chosen for its insane amount of detail without being a giant large format huge box. I feel an addiction to capturing moments that stand out as beautiful or special. The sense that waiting one more second before pressing the shutter release would mean forgetting that specific moment for ever. Most of the photographs on display were printed at the Cabrillo Color photo lab before it was cut for reasons of budget squandering. My hopes are that photography in its traditional form never dies.

Artist Reception 6-9 p.m.

Joaquin Spengemann is a Santa Cruz native returned to his roots after an extended residency in the east bay.  His collages are testimonies to excess and injustice, hubris and tyranny, salvation and redemption as they pay homage to and celebrate the fine craft of the illustrators and photographers whose work he dismembers and reorders.  His work exalts the power of nature and scrutinizes the nature of power with recurring themes of greed, romanticism, nostalgia, propaganda and bloodlust.   His most recent works betray a burgeoning penchant for the wisdom of alchemical hermeticism, and attempt through the glorious cartography born of the age of discovery to reveal the folly of statism, nationalism, and the currencies that bear their standards.   The artist is currently examining the concepts of “value” and “worth” from an antediluvian perspective.

Harbor High Hoops Jerseys

SCRS artist Mr. Free also happens to be the head coach of the Harbor High School Boys varsity basketball program. Sadly, Santa Cruz County Schools does not put a single cent towards athletics.  Leaving the burden of tournament fees, salaries and uniforms on the coach's lap.

With an estimated cost of $12,000 coach Free is looking to raise enough to fund new (much needed) uniforms for their team.

Much like music, sports are also an amazing outlet. The importance of sports in the life of high school students are invaluable and go much further than the basic answer that "it keeps kids off the streets." It does in fact keep kids off the streets, but it also instills lessons that are essential in life - discipline, responsibility, self confidence, sacrifice, accountability just to name a few.

What They Need & What You Get (excerpt from the campaign page)

Our goal for the uniforms is $5,000.  We've been blessed to have Under Armour offer our program a 40% discount.  The estimate I received was for $4675.00 plus shipping.  So the entire amount will be allocated toward uniforms.

I've already taken the risk and told my athletic director I am willing to sacrifice my salary in exchange for the uniforms if we do not reach our goal.  WE WILL HAVE UNIFORMS :) But if we come up short with this campaign, we will continue to fund raise via other avenues.  And yes, at the end of it all, if we do not reach our target the difference will be taken out of my pay.

If, however, we exceed our goal, all excess funds will go towards the programs general fund, which contributes to the above mentioned. (Equipment, salaries, tournaments, etc.)  Rest assured, the money stays with Harbor Hoops.

First Friday, May 6 - Calaveras De Los Héroes

Calaveras De Los Héroes – The Art of Enrique Lopez

First Friday, May 6 Artist Reception - 6 - 9 pm Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios 118 Coral Street

CALAVERAS DE LOS HÉROES

“Calaveras De Los Héroes” is an ongoing body of work that began in Fall 2008.  It is designed to honor individuals who have influenced me, as well as society in any way, shape, or form.  They are all revolutionaries in their own right.  These “Héroes” have changed the way we view the world whether it be through art, cinema, literature or politics.

This series began with “Para Mis Abuelas.”  It was made in honor of my grandmothers to commemorate them on Dia de los Muertos.  I then took the skull motif and applied it to other very influential people.

Like most things, this body of work continues to evolve.  In the first print, there is “noise” behind the skull.  In “¡Que Viva!” there are rays coming out of it, and after this one, I began creating the characters in sets of threes to further propel the idea of death.  “Calavera De Mahatma” stands alone because unlike the rest, this one print is a lithograph.  Up until this point, the people depicted have been of those who are no longer amongst us, however in the second set we see Robert Crumb, who is still alive.  This allowed for me to expand on my color scheme, as well as in the characters.  They no longer have to be dead to be a part of the series.  The third set introduces the boarder design in a much more consistent manner.

My goal in this body of work is to honor the names and faces of those who have influenced me.  I also want this series to bring awareness to these “Héroes.”  I want people to go home and research whom these individuals are and what they have done.  I want people to recognize why they are seeing them represented on these walls.  I want people to realize why they are the Calaveras De Los Héroes.

Rick and the team scoured the streets, clubs and schools of Santa Cruz to uncover 10 superbly talented, local, young performing “acts” who could sing, dance, play or perform.
